Every kitchen I've ever lived in has looked clean on the surface while quietly hiding an impressive amount of grime just below the visible zone. Behind the toaster. On top of the range hood. Around the seals of the fridge. Inside the microwave vent. A full kitchen deep clean isn't something you do every week — but doing it every 3-6 months makes the daily cleaning easier for months afterward, and it makes your kitchen feel genuinely fresh in a way surface wiping never does.

This is the checklist I follow. It's organized top to bottom (so dust falls onto surfaces you'll clean next, not surfaces you already finished). Budget: about 3 hours for a mid-size kitchen, or split across two evenings. Supplies: nothing exotic. Let's go.

Before you start: gather supplies

White vinegar. Baking soda. Dish soap. A stack of microfiber cloths (get 10-12 — it's the most useful cleaning purchase you'll ever make). One old toothbrush for crevices. Rubber gloves. Step 1: Clear the counters completely

Every appliance, jar, and object comes off the counters. Take everything to the dining table or the floor. This makes cleaning the counters and behind items possible, and it forces you to look at everything you own and decide if it belongs there at all. Trust me — you'll donate at least three appliances by the end of this step.

Step 2: Empty and clean the fridge

This is the most dreaded step but the most impactful. Pull everything out. Toss anything expired or that you know you won't use. Remove all shelves and drawers. Wash them in warm soapy water in the sink. While they dry, wipe the interior of the fridge with a solution of 1 tablespoon baking soda in 4 cups warm water — this deodorizes and cleans without leaving a chemical smell that contaminates food. Dry everything, replace shelves, and put items back organized by category. Wipe the top of the fridge (yes, up there) and the sides.

Step 3: Deep clean the stove and oven

Remove the grates and knobs. Soak them in hot soapy water for 30 minutes while you tackle other things. Sprinkle baking soda liberally across the stovetop and any greasy spots on the oven exterior. Spray with a mix of vinegar and water — it will foam. Let it sit 15 minutes, then scrub gently and wipe clean. For the oven interior, use the oven's self-clean function if it has one, or make a paste of baking soda and water, spread it inside the oven (avoiding heating elements), let sit overnight, then wipe clean the next morning with a damp cloth. Return the grates and knobs after they've soaked and been scrubbed.

Step 4: Range hood and filter

Grease accumulates on the range hood and its filter like nothing else in the kitchen. Remove the filter (it usually slides out). Soak it in hot water with a generous squirt of dish soap for 20-30 minutes. Scrub with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly. While it dries, wipe the range hood exterior with the same vinegar-and-water spray. A clean filter dramatically improves how well your range hood actually vents grease and odors.

Step 5: Microwave

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup water and 2 tablespoons white vinegar. Microwave on high for 3-5 minutes until it boils and steams the interior. Let it sit 2-3 more minutes without opening. Then wipe the interior easily with a damp cloth — the steam loosens every splatter. Don't forget the top of the microwave (dust magnet) and the underside where it meets the wall or cabinet.

Step 6: Small appliances

Wipe down the toaster (empty the crumb tray!), coffee maker (run one cycle of white vinegar through the water tank, then two cycles of clean water — descales it beautifully), kettle (fill with vinegar and water, boil, rinse), stand mixer, blender, and any others. Small appliances gather more grime than we notice; a monthly wipe-down of the exteriors is worth building in as a habit.

Step 7: Cabinets — inside and out

Wipe down the fronts of every cabinet with a damp cloth. Pay special attention to handles and the area around the cabinet above the stove (grease). For the interiors: pick 2-3 cabinets to fully empty and wipe out on this deep clean, rotating so you cover them all across 2-3 deep cleans. Empty the shelf, wipe with a damp cloth, and while it dries evaluate whether you actually use everything in it. This is a great moment to donate the pans and gadgets you haven't touched in a year.

Step 8: The sink and faucet

Scrub the sink with baking soda and a squeeze of dish soap. For stainless steel, buff with a soft cloth in the direction of the grain for a shiny finish. Descale the faucet by wrapping a plastic bag filled with white vinegar around it, secured with a rubber band, and leaving it for 30 minutes — mineral deposits dissolve. Rinse and buff. Clean the drain by pouring half a cup of baking soda followed by 1 cup vinegar. Let foam for 10 minutes, then flush with hot water.

Step 9: Dishwasher

Yes, the dishwasher needs cleaning too. Remove and rinse the filter (most people don't know their dishwasher has one — it's at the bottom center). Wipe around the door seal with a damp cloth. Place a cup of white vinegar in the top rack and run a hot cycle empty. Then sprinkle baking soda across the bottom and run a short cycle. Your dishwasher will smell fresh and clean dishes better for months.

Step 10: Trash can and recycling bin

Empty both. Take them outside and hose them down (or wipe thoroughly with soapy water in a big sink or bathtub). Let them dry fully before putting new liners in. Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda in the bottom before the liner — it absorbs odors between cleanings.

Step 11: Countertops and backsplash

Wipe the backsplash and the wall behind the stove. Pay attention to grout lines if you have tile — an old toothbrush with baking soda paste cleans them beautifully.

Step 12: Floors

Sweep or vacuum thoroughly, including under appliances if you can pull them out. Mop with a mild detergent appropriate for your floor type. Pay special attention to the area in front of the stove, sink, and fridge — the highest-grime zones.

Step 13: Light fixtures and switches

Wipe down light fixtures (turn them off first, and dust the shades or globes). Wipe every light switch and outlet plate — kitchen switches get touched a hundred times a day and gather more grime than anywhere else. A quick wipe with a soapy cloth transforms how the room reads.

Step 14: The final walk-through

Take one slow lap around the kitchen. Check for anything you missed. The tops of window trim. The vent above the stove. The area under the toe kick below the cabinets. Small edges catch the eye later; hit them now while you're already in cleaning mode.

The maintenance rhythm that keeps it fresh

After a deep clean, the maintenance is much easier. Daily: wipe counters and stovetop after cooking, run the dishwasher. Weekly: wipe the fridge exterior and cabinet fronts, mop the floor. Monthly: quick microwave steam-clean, wipe the range hood exterior. Every 3-6 months: repeat the full deep clean above. This rhythm keeps a kitchen feeling clean without the dread of accumulated grime.
